Oil on canvas, original work
A warm earthenware jug stands between two pale yellow apples, arranged on a deep red cloth with a band of dark blue along the bottom edge. The simple, rounded shapes and strong blocks of colour give the painting a modern, graphic feeling, as if the objects are quietly glowing in their own light. The limited palette of reds, oranges and yellows creates a cosy, kitchen-like atmosphere, while the blue ground adds a calm, grounding note beneath the heat of the background.
I painted this still life as a study of colour and balance, using the jug as a solid centre and the apples as softer echoes on each side. I wanted the objects to feel familiar and homely, but also bold and sculptural, like everyday things seen in a new way.
